Parent Governor Vacancies
would you like to be more involved in the life of the avon valley school & performing arts college?
We currently have vacancies for two parent governors, and we are eager to welcome parents who are passionate about contributing to our school’s continued success.
The Role of a Parent Governor
The Avon Valley School always aims to work in partnership with parents, and this undoubtedly brings benefits to the students. One of the most significant ways you can help is to volunteer to be a parent governor.
Our governing body plays a crucial role in:
- The School Vision: Ensuring the school has a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction that reflects the needs of our diverse community;
- Accountability and Performance: Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, ensuring every child reaches their full potential;
- Financial Stewardship: Overseeing the financial performance of the school, ensuring its money is well spent.
The role of a governor can be demanding but very rewarding. Duties include:
- Attending meetings of the Governing Board, usually outside of school hours, and contributing to Governing Board business
- Reading reports and papers and keeping up to date on the progress that the school is making; and
- Visiting the school from time to time during the school day
What We Are Looking For
As a parent governor, you will be a valued member of our team, providing a vital link between the school and the parent community. We want to ensure that the voices of parents are heard and that our decisions are informed by the perspectives of those who know our students best.
We are looking for individuals who are willing to dedicate their time to this important role and have:
- A strong commitment to the role and improving outcomes for children
- The inquisitiveness to question and analyse
- The willingness to learn
- Good interpersonal skills for effective collaboration
While prior experience as a governor, management skills, or knowledge of school finance are desirable skills, we emphasise that a genuine desire to contribute and a passion for our students' success are paramount.
Training and Support
Training and support will be available to help you develop into the role. This will include in-house mentoring and support as well as access to external governor training.
Diversity and Inclusion
We encourage parents from all backgrounds and experiences to consider this opportunity. We value diversity and believe that a governing body that reflects the richness of our school community is essential to our success.
Please be aware that all governor appointments are subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, ensuring the safety and well-being of our students.
Self-nominations will be accepted, but if you are nominating another parent, please seek their prior consent.
If there are more nominations than vacancies, we will hold an election by secret ballot on 16th June 2025.
If a ballot is necessary, voting papers will be sent to all parents together with details of the ballot procedure.
Conclusion
We believe that by working together, we can create a school environment where every child feels valued, supported and empowered to succeed. We hope you will consider joining us.
