At The Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College we recognise the importance of a smooth, positive transfer from primary school to secondary school.

We understand that this may be a stressful time for students and parents alike and therefore we work very closely with students, parents and our feeder primary schools to ensure that the process is as stress-free as possible.

Between now and September, events will be taking place to help your child become familiar with us, helping them feel part of their new school and surroundings and reassuring them about their future.

YOUR SMOOTH JOURNEY From Year 6 To Year 7

Applications are made via Warwickshire County Council between 1st September and 31st October. Your child’s school offer will be made on National Offer Day (2nd March).  Our Transition team will then keep in close contact with the local primary schools and during the Summer Term will visit the schools to meet with our new intake of students.

  • Our Transition and Primary Liaison Leader works closely with local primary schools, visiting students in their familiar environments to build relationships and ensure we understand each child’s needs before they arrive.
  • We offer Induction Days during the Summer Term, giving new students an exciting taste of secondary school life – a chance to explore the school, meet future teachers and classmates, and get comfortable in their new surroundings.
  • Our Year 7 Mentors (older students) provide a friendly face and support throughout the first year, helping new students settle in and thrive.
  • The first day of term in September is dedicated to our new Year 7 students. On this day students will carry out some baseline assessments and also familiarise themselves with the buildings, spend time with their tutor and attend their first “official” lessons.
  • A little later on in the Autumn Term, Year 7 parents and carers are invited to attend a Tutor Evening to meet their child’s tutor to discuss how their child has settled into school life.

Transition Evening

Induction Days - What to expect

The school runs a two-day transition programme which will take place on 8th and 9th July.

Our aim is to ensure that all our new students have every opportunity to make a positive transition into secondary education at Avon Valley, and we feel that the extra day reduces the anxiety levels and enables both parents and students to feel reassured that the process will go smoothly in September.

Despite the high levels of anxiety that some students feel on the first morning, we find that transition time is always a positive experience and that students really enjoy having the opportunity to get to know their form tutor, make new friends and get their bearings around the school. We know that extending the process to two days is even more reassuring, and that by the end of day two all of our incoming students will be looking forward to starting for real on September 3rd.

Details of how the days are organised will be given to your child when we visit them in their primary school.

Lunch arrangements for the two days will be as follows:

Induction evenings - What to expect

On the evening of the second transition day, parents and carers of our new Year 7 students are invited into school to meet senior staff and their child’s tutor, who will be caring for them during their time with us. This is also an opportunity for us to tell you all about their new school.

The evening will be run in two sessions, from 6.00pm – 7.00pm and from 7.15pm – 8.15pm. As this event is usually very well attended, and to avoid overcrowding in the theatre, we ask that parents with surnames from A-L attend the 6pm session and parents with surnames form M-Z attend at 7.15pm. Refreshments will be available from 5.30pm in the canteen.

We look forward to meeting you and our new students in July.
